Well I was going to start off this post by saying what an awful I have had. Then as the week unfolded I realised how amazingly lucky I am. Between the atrocities in Nice, the attempted coup in Turkey, a colleague of my husbands in the ambulance service struggling with PTSD took her own life and I received the news that an old friend of mine has been really struggling with his mental health. Sometimes the world can be wonderful but sometimes it can be a tough, cruel world. So whilst yes I have had a tough week, I haven’t been able to keep down any food or water, have almost been rushed into hospital and I have been struggling with pain but on the whole I am ok.
This week I saw my shoulder and elbow consultant and we have decided to operate on my elbow. The will be moving the nerve and trying a very new surgery to stabilise the joint. The surgery has been done once before and was successful but it was only 6 months ago so we are not sure of the long term outcome. There is a good chance that it will be a temporary stabilisation but at this stage we don’t know if that will be 1 or 10 years. It is worth a try as it is much less invasive than the alternative which involves ligament grafts. The ligament graft is a big operations and involved 2 open sites, there is a risk off this surgery failing because of the fact all my ligaments are in bad condition. I wonder if the new surgery works I can get my elbow doc to speak to my ankle doc and they can recreate it within my ankles to save doing the ligament grafts there.
Last week we have also heard that unfortunately the funding for the drug that I was taken has not been approved. So therefore in the last 10 days I have come off those tablets. This is why I have been struggling with pain, I am back relying purely on opioids which is not great for me. Because of the sickness I had all week I ended up having to cancel the breast check-up appointment but I will reschedule that for next week.
On the whole I am trying to look on the bright side, the sickness and inability to eat means I might lose a few pounds, especially with this heat wave. Generally, I am feeling lucky, I have amazing friends and a wonderful family and though my body may be falling apart I am ok. My heart goes out to those who have been effected by the events in Nice and Turkey and to anyone who is struggling at the moment.
